Be accountable for your choices………your experiences in life will be directed by them. Leadership is not about title, it is about being accountable, it is about making decisions that are always balanced against “the greater good,” and it is about filtering your communications so that your intent matches your effect.
Too often people define themselves by a title which is one dimensional, and if that title were to disappear then so does the person. Leadership needs to be about being a leader in life; which is multi-dimensional and allows us to grow into our best selves. We become better partners, parents, friends, and yes co-workers if we can aspire to lead in life.
Our decision making skills guide our choices, they are paramount to our success, and so they must be highly evolved. Like moving away from ego based decisions or we will find ourselves trying to people please instead of making choices that support the greater good. We must be willing to look at our life choices with humility rather than with ego and the need to be liked for our decisions. So much more is possible when we take responsibility for our free will and remember that we always choose how we respond to everything in life. The beauty is that when we choose incorrectly, we can always choose again.
Dr. Stephen Covey said “Every human being has four endowments; self-awareness, conscience, independent will, and creative imagination. These give us the ultimate human freedom…..the power to choose, to respond, to change. Each of us guards a gate of change that can be opened only from the inside. Holding people to the responsible course is not demeaning; it is affirming.”
