Always do your best……listen carefully to feedback when it is offered. Sometimes our impulse is to reject, ignore, or disagree with feedback when we receive it. When we do that, we miss an opportunity to grow and develop so that we are living our best life. As leaders in our community, at work, and at home, the one thing that is integral to our success, is that people buy into our leadership. Title doesn’t make you a leader, because you can lead without title. What makes us a leader is our ability to make meaningful and trust building connections with those we journey with. When people buy into your leadership they can be more patient about the vision and the way forward. When they see and feel your humanity, they can trust.
So when you get feedback; instead of justifying, defending, or rejecting it. Ask yourself what is the 2% truth in what I am hearing? Do I really understand what they are telling me? What is the opportunity for me as a human being to grow from this situation. We are hard wired to connect, and people want to connect with you and believe in you, if you will let them. Excellent Leadership at its core; is made up of humility and will. It builds trust with every interaction. It takes responsibility when things go wrong, and it gives accolades when all goes well. It takes both heart and skill to give and receive feedback well. For all of us, there are stories hidden in the language we use, whether we’re conscious of them or not. That language tells the truth and the story of your heart and your mind.
John Maxwell said “As a leader, having a great vision and a worthy cause is not enough to get people to follow you. You have to become a better leader; you must get people to buy into you. That is the price you have to pay if you want your vision to have a chance of becoming a reality. You cannot ignore the Law of buy-in and remain successful as a leader.”
